I won't recommend a specific bike, but try a hybrid bike. They have a more upright riding position, and wheels that are in between mountain bike tires and road bike tires. These won't go straight through the woods or over big rocks, but you can still go on gravel trails and paths. I have a Trek hybrid (the 7100, $440). The 7000 costs around $350 but has no front shocks. If you plan on riding more on trails, then try to find a hybrid from another brand (Trek's hybrids are generally meant for road use more than trails).
