It appears that humans can only "smell" when we inhale and not when we exhale. Is that so, and why?

That's not true. Strong smells can get "embedded" in your lungs and the smell sometimes will come up when you exhale. Other than that, I guess we just get used to the smell of air in our lungs and breathing pages, until a new smell comes in.
